After facing a handful of our new "BOSS FIGHTS" I can relay the following first hand information:
1. Thargoids have multiple attack types.
1. Yellow lightning EMP - seizes your ship for a few seconds
2. Red lasers -- bleeds through shields
3. Caustic Missles - causes corrosive damage that will continue to eat at ship slowly until repaired via limpet or station
4. Thargon Swarm - 32 mini kamakazis that can inflict big damage. (i think its explosive, but it seems to do module damage too)
5. CAUSTIC DAMAGE after a Thargoid explosion is VERY damaging....perhaps a limpet collector would be worth having so your ship doesnt have to enter the Caustic Cloud to gather Thargoid materials.
How to deal with the threat:
1. Upon seeing the Thargoid, you will be scanned...approach to 500 m and XENO scan it back, allows you to target their sub-targets...their 4 "hearts".
Thargoid is now at 100% hull (no shield)...Thargoid Swarm may or may not be out at this time.
If you initiate attack, do as much damage as possible ... the self healing hull must be brought down to 80% hull using AX missles / AX MC to "EXERT" a single heart.
An EXERTED heart is one that can be now be damaged while in the EXERTED state -- keep an eye and target EXERTED heart through the left hand NAV panel.
Important:***you have a short window before it goes back to a NOMINAL state (cant hit it in this state) so it is imperative to get DPS on target on the heart during these EXERTED windows.
Use your SLF to attack the Swarm and keep it distracted...if the swarm gets near you...boost and get away to minimize damage.
Once a heart goes back to NOMINAL, you must again get the HULL down to 80% to reEXERT the heart for further damage.
Once you get a HEART to 0%, the Thargoid will scream and a shield will come up around it.
This shield is prone to damage from standard weaponry and is easily taken down with concentrated effort.
(A Long Range Beam is very effective as you can stay back 3-5K and still hit the Thargoid while charging shields, popping SCB or even activating a AMFU.)
However, any regular weapon can impact and take this shield down.
I recommend finding a USS that is near a station, makes re-arm runs manageable while one wing member can stay in the instance and kite the Thargoid, while others return to station to quickly repair/re-arm.
SHIELDS are more important than I thought initially against the Thargoids, and I have exchanged one 5D HRP for a SCB to use on my ships as shields up means you are going to last a lot longer.
*Your shields keep the Swarm and the other attacks from damaging modules heavily. Combine shields with a good set of MRP ( i recommend 2 for big ships and at least 1 for the smaller ones)
ARMOR is very important as some attacks bleed right through the shield much like a phasing weapon, but once you get knocked to 50% you need to bail and repair.
Thargoids are fast so be smart and dont lose your ship.
You could limp off and use Hull Repair limpets but they are soooo slow, hence my recommendation of fighting near a station.
The USS's containing Thargs are all over the Pleaides right now.
AMFU could be usable, for a canopy breach, but in a good wing of 3 or 4, you should be able to get out, repair and get back in the fight without the AFMU.
STRATEGY:
____________
I have seen solo killing of them, but to do this you must be VERY VERY accurate with your attacks and precise with when and how to engage them.
I have attempted to solo one a couple times. Best I have done is to kill a heart and a half before I either am out of ammo or just tired of the fucking heart not being exerted, because once you get to about 83% the Thargoid gets erratic and tries to flee the issue or turn and move.
So for WINGS....The Corvette, Anaconda, and really all the Fed ships have nice weapon convergence (and would make good MC Teams)...making an EXERTED heart easier to hit with the fixed MC's.
I can smash EXERTED hearts hard with my DropShip, but the Cutters weapon spread make it better as a missle boat due to the nacels.
A TANK CUTTER armed with 4 Missles or 3 Missles/1 MC could make quick work of the hull to get a heart exerted.
Then FAST FED ships come in and MC the EXERTED heart while its exposed. Rinse/repeat.
All the while SLF's from any wing ships that have them should be continuously hounding the Swarm.
Patience matters. The Thargoid will, if given time, allow times where it will allow you to line it up for missles followed by MC's and do the most damage...thats when you have to hit it HARD!
Also, if you have them, ships carrying REGEN beams may come in handy as the longer your shields are up the less hull and module damage you will suffer.
